Minimally Invasive Surgery
The board certified gynecological surgeons at Meridian Women’s Health have over 50 years surgical experience collectively. Our physicians perform a broad range of gynecologic surgeries. Many procedures that once required hospitalization can now be done on an outpatient basis, either in the office, hospital or at the Outpatient Surgery Center conveniently located in the Outpatient Medical Center. Through continuing education, we are committed to enhancing our surgical techniques and broadening our knowledge of technically advanced treatment options, including many minimally invasive surgical procedures. Gynecological surgery can be performed through several routes: vaginal, hysteroscopic, laparoscopic, robotic-assisted laparoscopic , a combination of laparoscopic and vaginal, and open abdominal approaches. These approaches are used to treat a variety of conditions some of which are: abnormal uterine bleeding, endometriosis, pelvic pain, ovarian cysts, fibroids and other conditions. Procedures include polypectomy, endometrial ablation, myomectomy (fibroid removal), ovarian cystectomy ( cyst removal), oophorectomy (ovary removal), hysterectomy and others.
Most gynecological surgery performed today can be accomplished with a minimally invasive (small incisions or no incisions) approach.
Hysteroscopy allows a direct view of the interior of the uterus using a thin telescope to enter the natural opening of the cervical canal. Saline fluid is used to gently open up the uterine cavity. Polyp removal, fibroid removal, and endometrial ablation can be performed with this technique.
Laparoscopy is direct visualization of the abdominal and pelvic cavities, ovaries, outside of the tubes and uterus by using a laparoscope. The laparoscope is a long thin instrument with a light source at its tip, to light up the inside of the abdomen or pelvis. Fiber optic fibers carry images from a lens, at the tip of the laparoscope to a camera which feeds the images on video monitors. This allows the surgeons a view in real time. Small instruments can then be used to perform the procedures needed.
The robotic surgery system involves laparoscopy with a specialized device that allows better visualization and more dexterity through advanced instrumentation.
The robotic surgery system increases our ability to operate on patients with prior abdominal or pelvic surgery (including C-sections), more complex conditions, and patients with larger uteri. These patients benefit from less trauma, blood loss and post-op pain as well as shorter hospital stays and faster return to normal activities (including work) than those who have open procedures.
