Robotic Surgical Services: Gynecologic Surgery

Northwest Hospital gynecologic surgeons perform many of their procedures using the da Vinci system. This less-invasive option to more traditional, open surgeries, allows the surgeon greater precision and an increased range of motion while also minimizing pain and the risk associated with large incisions. While robotic surgery is always dependent on a patient’s unique diagnosis, a minimally-invasive treatment option can often solve many gynecologic conditions and increase the likelihood of a quick recover and superior clinical results.

Robotic surgery is used to effectively treat a variety of gynecological conditions, including:

Endometriosis
This condition occurs when cells similar to those found inside the uterus grow in a location outside the uterine wall. Endometriosis affects an estimated 5.5 million women nationwide. In many cases, endometriosis causes no symptoms or only mild ones. Sometimes, severe endometriosis must be treated by removing all of the reproductive organs – uterus, tubes and ovaries. If a woman is young and wishes to maintain her ability to become pregnant, the da Vinci robot can also be used to remove affected endometrial tissue.

Uterine Fibroids
Fibroids are non-cancerous, or benign, tumors that can grow in a woman’s uterus. Not all women who develop fibroids will have symptoms, but some common ones include frequent urination, sometimes painful and heavy menstruation, and an enlarged lower abdomen.

Vaginal or Uterine Prolapse
A vaginal or uterine prolapse occurs when the network of muscles, ligaments and skin in and around a woman’s vagina weaken or break. This can ultimately affect the uterus, rectum, bladder, urethra, small bowel and the vagina itself, causing them to prolapse, or dislodge, from their normal positions. Pelvic reconstructions can be performed using the da Vinci robot for women who are candidate for the surgery, and can often preserve a woman’s ability to conceive in the future.

Ovarian Cysts and Other Masses
Ovarian cysts and other types of ovarian masses can form as a result of a prior surgery such as a hysterectomy. The da Vinci robot allows surgeons to delicately dissect and free cysts or masses without subjecting a patient to a more invasive, open surgical method.
