Northwest Hospital Leader Recognized for Health Insurance Enrollment Efforts

SEATTLE, WA (April 23, 2014) – Northwest Hospital & Medical Center Director of Patient Financial Services and Patient Access Janet Walthew was honored at a press conference held by the Washington Health Benefit Exchange in Seattle on April 23. Twenty-three individuals from around Washington State were recognized for their outstanding contributions to Affordable Care Act (ACA) insurance enrollment by Governor Jay Inslee, Senator Patty Murray, Washington Health Benefit Exchange CEO Richard Onizuka, and Health Care Authority Director Dorothy Teeter. Walthew was one of only two hospital staff members to be honored.

“These individuals have been nominated by their respective organizations for going above and beyond the call of duty to enroll people in health insurance,” said Inslee during the event. “We want to thank you. You have worked in every corner of the state and I hope you are going to be proud of this for decades to come.”

Walthew was singled out as a committed enrollment advocate for many years who devotes her personal time to helping members of the community access healthcare benefits. Event organizers noted that she “always keeps application forms in her purse, just in case.”

The Washington Health Benefit Exchange Appreciation Event was held to mark the end of the first open enrollment period for health insurance coverage. The Exchange announced that more than one million Washington residents obtained health coverage through the Washington Healthplanfinder website, wahealthplanfinder.org, between Oct. 1, 2013 and March 31, 2014, including more than 600,000 who became insured for the very first time.

“Today we are celebrating healthcare reform that is working in the state of Washington. There are 600,000 reasons to celebrate — 600,000 Washingtonians waking up this morning with the security of healthcare,” said Inslee.

In addition to her role at Northwest Hospital, Walthew is the newly-elected vice-president and program chair for the Washington/Alaska Chapter of Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA). She is past president and chair of the board of the Evergreen Chapter of the American Association of Healthcare Administrative Management (AAHAM). She has also served as a board member of Seattle Senior Services, the Salvation Army and Cancer Lifeline.
