Health Tip for 9/2/2010

Have you ever heard about “eating for two” when you’re pregnant? When you’re pregnant, you need to eat the right nutrients for both you and your baby, but that doesn’t mean you can eat all you want, says Dr. Dawn Frankwick, an obstetrician and gynecologist at Meridian Women’s Health.

She says a young pregnant woman in good health is going to need about an extra 300 calories a day. That’s about the equivalent of a big glass of milk. Eating a lot of extra calories only works if you’re doing a lot of exercise during the pregnancy. Otherwise, more food adds up to more fat.

Gaining too much weight during pregnancy can lead to health complications, like gestational diabetes and high blood pressure, which can be dangerous both to you and your baby. To help prevent complications, make sure to see your doctor for pre-natal care and nutrition information – and take your vitamins!
