H1N1 Update: How to Keep Healthy
Northwest Hospital has mobilized its team of clinical experts and is closely monitoring the situation. As in all instances of infectious disease, disaster or emergency, we are committed to preparedness and to ensuring the safety and health of our community.
H1N1 virus symptoms are very similar to regular influenza symptoms. They include:
- Fever
- Tiredness
- Lack of appetite
- Coughing
- Runny nose
- Sore throat
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
Influenza most often spreads from person to person through coughing or sneezing. To protect yourself and your family from the H1N1 virus and other communicable diseases:
- Some patients with suspected illness may be restricted from having visitors.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth to prevent the spread of germs.
- Drink plenty of fluids, eat nutritious foods.
- Try to avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Contact your primary care physician if you are feeling ill.
- If you get sick, stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
- Avoid travel to affected areas.
