For those who have had a heart attack or other cardiac condition, Northwest Hospital’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program can help support recovery, reduce risk for further cardiovascular disease and increase overall health and well-being.
Though surgery can repair a patient’s immediate heart problems, cardiac rehabilitation is just as important for long-term recovery. It is a proven, evidence-based practice that has been shown to improve outcomes for cardiac patients by teaching positive health choices and advocating lifestyle changes that help patients regain their quality of life.
Patients enrolled in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program participate in exercise sessions supervised by critical care nurses and exercise physiologists specializing in cardiac rehabilitation. These exercise sessions, held three times a week, are designed to improve cardiovascular endurance, muscle strength, flexibility and balance. Patients are monitored while exercising, and a cardiologist is on call during all classes.
In addition to exercise, educational classes provide patients with information they need to reduce cardiac risk factors and make lasting lifestyle changes. Class topics include heart-healthy nutrition (led by a registered dietitian), CPR training, education on the anatomy and function of the heart, weight management support, information on sleep disorders, stress management and relaxation techniques, and identification of the symptoms of angina and heart attack.
Northwest Hospital’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program has operated for 20 years. The program is certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation and is staffed by a medically-trained, multidisciplinary team of nurses, exercise physiologists and dietitians, with oversight by a board-certified cardiologist.
The Cardiac Fitness Center is conveniently located in the McMurray Building on the Northwest Hospital campus. The facility is outfitted with state-of-the-art monitoring devices, the latest exercise equipment, and dressing rooms with lockers and showers. Exercise classes are conducted with treadmills and stationary bicycles, as well as hand weights, yoga balls and other stretching and toning equipment.
A referral from a physician is required for enrollment in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, which is located in the state-of-the-art Cardiac Fitness Center in the McMurray Building on Northwest Hospital’s main campus.
