Your Day of Surgery
After check in, patients are brought to the pre-surgical area where you can await your procedure with friends and family. Your nurse will begin your IV and any necessary medications. You will also meet your anesthesiologist who will review your medical history.
Length of Surgery
The length of your surgery is entirely dependent on the type of operation you are having. Day surgery typically takes between one and two hours. Surgeries that require hospitalization usually vary from one to four hours. Please keep in mind that these are only estimated times. There are many variables that can affect the length of your surgery. Your treating physician will make sure to keep your family and friends informed during your operation.
When Can You go Home?
Patients typically stay for about two hours following day surgery. If you are admitted to the hospital, most stays are one to two nights depending on the type of surgery performed.
We want to ensure each patient who is discharged from our care is physically ready to go home. A few criteria you have to meet include:
- You must be able to urinate on your own without difficulty.
- You must be able to tolerate clear liquids without nausea or vomiting.
- Your pain must be controlled with oral medication.
- Your bowel sounds must be normal.
