Solutions for Familial Cancer Risk
Our gynecologic oncologists can address genetic susceptibility to breast and ovarian cancer, including management of women with BRCA-1 or BRCA-2 genetic mutations.
We can also help patients with strong family histories of colon cancer, which may be due to mismatched repair gene mutations. These are commonly designated as Lynch Syndrome II or hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer syndrome. Women in families with these genetic changes are at increased risk of developing endometrial and ovarian cancers. The best possible care for these patients requires coordination between specialists in colon cancer and us – specialists in the treatment of gynecologic cancers.
Experts in Pelvic Surgery
As board-certified gynecologists with special expertise in pelvic surgery, we are also called on to manage women with non-cancerous yet surgically challenging problems. For example, we surgically treat large ovarian masses, uterine fibroids, extensive endometriosis and pelvic organ prolapse.
Techniques honed in the management of our cancer patients, such as our use of minimally invasive procedures that decrease tissue trauma and blood loss, reduce complications and speed post-operative recovery, directly benefit all our patients.
Our goal at Women’s Cancer Care of Seattle is to provide excellent care and support for you while you are undergoing treatment. You and your friends and family are a vital part of our team throughout the entire therapy process. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
Women’s Cancer Care of Seattle is equipped with a state of the art chemotherapy infusion suite where a skilled team offers the latest in cutting edge treatments for gynecologic malignancies. The suite, which boasts large picture windows that look out onto Northwest Hospital’s serene wooded campus, was designed to offer our patients a comforting and calm environment.
Treatments include intravenous and intraperitoneal chemotherapy, novel biologic agents including angiogenesis inhibitors, growth factors and other supportive measures, and new agents currently available only through clinical trials.
Our team of experienced chemotherapy nurses works closely with physicians and other care providers to ensure the proper implementation of each patient’s treatment plan. Prior to starting treatment, each patient meets with one of our chemotherapy nurses to review her personalized infusion schedule. At this appointment, and in any visit to our office, we encourage our patients to remain involved in the process and address any questions or concerns she may have. In addition, a physician is always present in the clinic during chemotherapy infusions.
At Women’s Cancer Care of Seattle, our goal is to provide individualized chemotherapy treatments in a safe, comfortable, and caring atmosphere.
The physicians at Women’s Cancer Care of Seattle have built expertise in a variety of advanced surgical techniques, including a specialization in robotic surgery using the da Vinci® S Robotic Surgical System.
Named after the legendary artist, who invented the first robot and who used three-dimensional detail to bring his art to life, the da Vinci S Surgical System creates a virtual extension of the surgeon’s eyes and hands, using 3-D, high-definition vision and four robotic “hands” as extensions of the surgeon’s own to go where human hands typically cannot.
Used for a wide variety of minimally invasive gynecologic surgical procedures including hysterectomy, da Vinci offers a state-of-the-art alternative to conventional laparoscopic and traditional open surgery methods. Guided by the surgeon, who sits at a separate viewing console, the da Vinci robot translates the natural movements of the surgeon’s hands, wrists and fingers into micro-movements of the robot in order to create and maneuver within smaller incisions and to perform delicate and complex procedures with greater precision and dexterity.
Surgery using the da Vinci system offers our patients a variety of benefits, including:
- Faster recovery and quicker return to normal activities
- Less post-operative pain and scarring and less risk of infection
- Less blood loss and fewer transfusions
- Shorter hospital stay
