Bio

I am an assistant professor in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the associate surgical director of adult congenital heart disease. A native of Wisconsin, I grew up in South Carolina and attended college at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, and medical school at MUSC. I returned to Wisconsin for general surgery residency at the University of Wisconsin-Madison during which I completed a 2 year research fellowship focused on mucosal immunology as related to trauma and type/route of nutrition.

In 2008 I met and married my wife, Jessica.

I completed the adult cardiothoracic fellowship here at UWMC in 2013 and the congenital cardiac fellowship at Seattle Children’s in 2014.

Patient Care Philosophy

I love my job.  I get to do work I enjoy and help patients with congenital and acquired heart diseases.  I like partnering with patients and their families to figure out optimal treatment options and then working hard to see the care plan through to completion.  I am a small part of a superb team at UWMC’s Regional Heart Center that wants to help you get better!

Clinical Interests

My clinical practice at UWMC includes adult congenital heart disease in close partnership with doctors Ed Verrier, Karen Stout, Eric Krieger, Jason Deen, Tom Jones, Steve Seslar April Stempien-Otero and Melissa Robinson.

I also treat patients with acquired heart disease and have specific interests in surgery for patients with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy and endocarditis (infection of the heart valves). I also perform heart transplants.

Research Interests

My research interests include adult congenital heart disease, use of 3D printing in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and transition of patients from pediatric to adult care.
