Dr. Gordon received his MD from Case Western Reserve in 1982, trained in neurology and internal medicine at McGill University in Montreal, and practiced neurology outside Montreal from 1988-1996, where he was clinical instructor at the University of Sherbrooke, chair of the Ethics Committee of the Quebec Medical Association, and member of the Ethics Committee of the Canadian Medical Association. After moving to Seattle in 1996, he has remained active nationally as past vice-chair of the Ethics. Law, and Humanities Committee and as outgoing chair of the Fair Hearing Panel Committee of the American Academy of Neurology.

In 2009, Dr. Gordon received the AAN Award for Creative Expression of Human Values in Neurology. Dr. Gordon is currently clinical associate professor of neurology at UW and is chair of the Ethics Committee of Northwest Hospital.
