Dr. Mackensen is a Professor of Anesthesiology, chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia, the UW Medicine Research & Education Endowed Professor in Anesthesiology and an Adjunct Professor of Medicine. In addition to cardiothoracic anesthesiology and critical care medicine, he is an internationally recognized expert in interventional echocardiography. As a key member of the UW structural heart valve team, he is intimately involved in multidisciplinary efforts that aim to advance minimally invasive transcatheter cardiovascular care.

Dr. Mackensen earned his M.D. from the University of Hamburg (Germany) and his Ph.D. from the Technical University in Munich (Germany). His professional training includes a residency in Anesthesiology at the University Hospital in Munich (Germany) and a two-year Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Anesthesia at Duke University from 1998-2000. In 2000, he completed the National Board of Echocardiography PTEXAM (recertified in 2010).

As a Fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography (F.A.S.E.) he serves on the Council on Perioperative Echocardiography (COPE), the Research Committee and the Industry Relations Committee at the American Society of Echocardiography’s (ASE).

Dr. Mackensen is also an elected member of the board of directors of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists (SCA) and serves on both, the scientific program committee as well as the research committee of the SCA.

Patient Care Philosophy

I aim for excellence in my day-to-day patient care, as a physician-scientist in clinical research and as a clinician-educator. I enjoy serving our patients as a member of a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, cardiologists and other health care providers, all closely working together to improve the quality and safety of cardiovascular and thoracic care.
