Bio

Dr. Fligner is director of Autopsy and After Death Services for UW Pathology (UWMC, HMC and SCCA). She is a professor in the Department of Pathology and adjunct professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine. Her professional focus is adult and perinatal/fetal autopsy pathology.

Dr. Fligner is board certified in anatomic, clinical and forensic pathology. Prior to coming to the University of Washington Medical Center, she worked as a forensic pathologist at the King County Medical Examiner's Office for nearly nine years. She directs a diagnostic autopsy service which provides high quality autopsies, with a robust intra-departmental and interdisciplinary teaching program.

Patient Care Philosophy

Patient care does not end at death. An autopsy can provide answers for families and health care providers about the cause of a patient's death or illness, as well as, provide valuable educational opportunities for physicians and improve medical care for other patients.

Our After Death Services program is focused on working with families and hospital staff to ensure that the administrative activities necessary after a death go smoothly. We appreciate being able to provide this assistance to families at such a difficult time.

Clinical Interests

Providing high quality adult and perinatal-fetal autopsy services.

Research Interests

Autopsy pathology in global health, pathology education in low resource settings, interdisciplinary teaching using autopsy pathology, education of health care providers to improve after death care and death certification, standards and training in autopsy pathology, innovative collaborative research using autopsy material or methods, including pancreatic pathology in type 2 diabetes and microbial micro-environments in cystic fibrosis.
