Patient Care Philosophy

For me, the field of palliative care is at the heart of what it means to be a doctor. In palliative care, it is the practitioner’s job to get to know the patient as a person, beyond their illness, and understand their family and life at home. I try to learn about what matters most to people and then try to develop a shared plan of healthcare that will accomplish their goals and reflect their personal values. Having a serious illness is stressful enough and I want to help support people along their journey to make the load they carry just a little lighter. I also believe that it is my duty to be an advocate for my patients and their families, who do not always have a voice to ensure that all of my patients, from all backgrounds, get the same excellent medical care.

Dr. Hurd is passionate about improving palliative care education and compassionate communication training for all healthcare professionals using innovative strategies to teach learners how to discuss serious illness with patients and their families.
