Awards and Recognition
We’re proud of the acclaim we’ve received for our excellence in patient care and safety. Among the local, regional and national recognition we’ve received are:
In April, 2014, Northwest Hospital & Medical Center was honored with its fourth consecutive “A” Hospital Safety Score by The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits. Scores are assigned to U.S. hospitals based on preventable medical errors, injuries, accidents and infections. Of the 2500 hospitals nationwide that were rated, only 32% received an “A”. The Hospital Safety Score is compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading experts on patient safety and is designed to give the public information they can use to protect themselves and their families.

In 2012, Northwest Hospital was recognized as a Primary Stroke Care Center by the Joint Commission and was awarded their Gold Seal for quality of care. This distinction signifies that Northwest Hospital has implemented stringent national guidelines required for high-level stroke care.
The Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence Award from Healthgrades, a leading independent healthcare ratings organization, is a first for Northwest Hospital and places it in the top five percent of the nation’s 5,000 non-federal hospitals. The select group of hospitals that receive this award provide patients with a lower risk of adverse clinical outcomes and have lower patient mortality rates and procedure complications. To be considered, a hospital must earn star ratings in at least 19 of the 26 procedure and diagnosis categories that HealthGrades analyzes. These star ratings range from one-star (poor) to five stars (best).
The Emergency Medicine Excellence Award from Healthgrades, a leading independent healthcare ratings organization, is another first for Northwest Hospital and recognizes clinical excellence in emergency medicine, from timely diagnosis to appropriate initial treatment for the following medical conditions: bowel obstruction, COPD, diabetic acidosis and coma, gastrointestinal bleed, heart attack, heart failure, pancreatitis, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, respiratory failure, sepsis and stroke. NWH is one of only two hospitals in Seattle and one of five recognized in the state with this award. This award means NWH is among the top five percent in the nation for emergency medicine. Only 263 hospitals across the nation had risk-adjusted mortality rates low enough to qualify them for this award, using Medicare patient data from 2008 through 2010.
This is the fourth consecutive year Northwest Hospital has achieved both the Spine Surgery Excellence Award and a ranking among the top 10 percent in the nation for spine surgery from Healthgrades, a leading independent healthcare ratings organization. HealthGrades also ranks the hospital’s program at number four in Washington State for spine surgery, and it’s the second year in a row the program made the top five. The program is five-star rated for spine surgery and back/neck surgery (except spinal fusion), both three years in a row.
Northwest Hospital received the Patient Safety Excellence Award from HealthGrades, a leading independent healthcare ratings organization, for the seventh consecutive year in 2013. The award recognizes superb consistent, safe and effective medical care. Safety indicators included death from surgical complications, pressure ulcers and post-operative respiratory failure and sepsis (blood infection).
